The beautiful Caribbean island of Saint Lucia has long been a favoured destination for honeymooning couples, families and solo travellers in search of relaxation and adventure. Nestling in the Lesser Antilles between Barbados and the French island of Martinique, it has been fought over for centuries by the British and French. Periods of control by both countries have left a historical legacy reflected in the landmarks, architecture and fascinating tales of this tropical island.
At only 27 miles long and 14 wide, Saint Lucia is a small island and easy to navigate and get around. Major towns include the bustling capital of Castries in the North West, the old French capital of Soufriere on the west coast, the popular resort of Gros Islet in the north, and the town of Vieux Fort in the far south. Saint Lucia is well known for its impressive mountain scenery, with the tallest mountain on the island, Mount Gimie, reaching 950 m. The island has a volcanic origin, and this can be seen in the many majestic landforms, including Mount Gimie itself. Other volcanic landforms include the Pitons, two volcanic plugs on the south west coast that have become iconic images of Saint Lucia, and the drive through volcano, Caldera of Qualibou. Hot sulphur springs and steam emitting fumaroles make for a spectacular atmosphere. The interior of Saint Lucia is decorated with lush tropical rainforest, and enough delights to amaze even the most intrepid naturalist. Excursions to the Saint Lucia Botanical Gardens, with their tropical flowers and beautiful waterfalls, are popular, and there are miles of hiking and nature trails around the island. Fertile plantations featuring tropical crops, including banana and cocoa, dot the island, while soft, sandy beaches and sparkling turquoise bays surround the coast.
Hewanorra International Airport is located in the south of the island, near the town of Vieux Fort. Vieux Fort is the second largest town on the island and boasts a fascinating fusion of new and old architecture; colonial buildings around historic Clark Street are a testament to the town’s past, while modern construction tastefully compliments the town’s heritage. Hewanorra International Airport was originally used as a military air base by the U.S. army and came into operation during World War II, before being converted into a commercial airport. Today, Hewanorra International Airport consists of one terminal offering both international and domestic travel via 16 airlines. The airport sees around 500,000 passengers pass through annually and services large aircraft such as Boeing 747 and Airbus A340.
