George Charles airport was once known as Vigie airport. It was renamed George Charles airport in 1997 after a politician who was awarded the Saint Lucia Cross in 1987. Sir George Charles was a trade unionist and founder of the Saint Lucia Labour Party, which was responsible for many social and constitutional reforms in Saint Lucia. George Charles was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988. Saint Lucia is still today part of the British Commonwealth and has been an independent state associated with the United Kingdom since 1979.
