Nestled on the south coast of the tropical Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, Soufriere is the oldest town on the island and the original French capital. Today it has a laidback feel, with an intriguing market and many nearby attractions. It makes an excellent base for a holiday, both for its Caribbean charm and its convenient location.
Saint Lucia’s most iconic attraction, the Saint Lucia Pitons, Gros Piton and Petit Piton, are located near to Soufriere. The Pitons, two volcanic plugs, are now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Lucia is well known for its volcanic activity, and there are hot sulphur springs and fumeroles emitting steam, in the caldera of the Qualibou volcano, as further testament. The volcano is now dormant, and it is possible to drive through it.
The Soufriere Estate was originally granted to three brothers in 1713 by Louis XIV of France, and mineral springs discovered on the estate were used by French soldiers. These fell into disuse until the 20th century, and in 1983, the estate, along with its mineral springs, were opened to tourists. Nowadays this area includes nature trails as well as an 18th century watermill originally used for sugar production and also recently used for hydroelectric power. The Saint Lucia Botanical Gardens covers six acres of the estate, including the beautiful Diamond Falls and the Diamond River, black due to the colour of volcanic mud. The gardens feature tropical plants such as hibiscus, heliconias, vanilla and cocoa and are a superb place to while away an afternoon.
